For my podcast, I really wanted to highlight the college student and how social media is affected. ]
I believe your social media reflects very much of yourself and your character. I brought a few of my friends by the dorm room last week to talk about an article called Is Your Social Media Hurting Your College Acceptance Chances? After reading the article, I found this statistic to be very highlighting stating,
“In a recent study, the director of the Center for Marketing Research at the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth found that “21% of colleges used social-networking sites for recruiting prospects and gathering information about applicants.” Furthermore, another study that included 500 top colleges found that 38% of admissions counselors have looked at applicant’s social networking sites and said that “what they saw ‘negatively affected’ their views of the applicant.”
While preparing for the podcast and re-reading this specific section, the questions that I wanted to get my college friends advice on is: Would your social media positively reflect your beliefs why or why not? Do you think that it is okay for future employers, admissions counselors, and others to judge you based off of your social media profile? What is one piece of advice that you would give fellow peers to help them when it comes to posting?
I thought the conversation that we had reflected how my fellow peers. Many college students do not realize the things that they post will affect them later in life. I had not gotten the chance to answer these questions when it came to the actual podcast, so on this blog, I will highlight my thoughts!
Personally, My social media reflects all of my thoughts and follows my moral compass. I use social media as more of a professional than a personal tool. While it is not everyone’s first thought, I think that it is okay and encouraged that future employers, admissions counselor and others to view your social media with a microscope. Do I believe that it is okay to judge someone based off of their social media? No, but I do think it is a direct reflection of a person. One piece of advice that I would give my fellow peers is to always review and reflect on previous social media posts while continuing to post in an honorable way every single day. Many students do not scroll through and see the last post on the profile that they use daily. That can be very helpful when getting a job or changing the image of your social media.
For all my fellow college students, what would your social media say about yourself?
