My personal use of social media started in March 2019.
Growing up in a social media-heavy era, it might be surprising to some that I
only started to create accounts in March. It was both my choice and reliable
advice from my parents. My dad is a United Methodist minister, and my mom is a
middle school teacher. Throughout their lives, whether they were on hiring
committees or saw the effect of social media in negative ways, they always told
me and my sister it was our internet image and what is posted will be found
forever. I knew I wanted to wait until I needed a social media footprint to
create my accounts. I decided March was a perfect time as I could announce
where I will be attending college and join the freshman ONU Facebook page.
Currently, I have Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, Twitter, and Pinterest. I am
very cautious of what I post, who is viewing it, and what all of my profiles
will look like to peers, professors, and future employers. I have the same profile picture and similar biographies for all of them, and I even watch what
I like or comment.
When it
comes to the content that I post, it is more I think set in the tone of a
professional light. I post life events, things that I support and information I
feel could be useful to my following. To me, "feeding the content
monster" is as simple as posting frequently but with a purpose. If I
haven't posted on my Instagram for a week, I may find a selfie-and add a quote,
but I won't reach very far if I don't have good content. On the other hand, I
won't go completely silent for weeks because that isn't very enticing to my
followers. There is a balance that everyone finds when they are "feeding
their content monster."
When it
comes to perfecting my posts, I follow my checklist, and through reading
chapter three, it is helpful to have another list to use. I have enjoyed reading
this book and look forward to reading more! Comment below how you manage your
content monster and your history with social media, I am always interested in
learning from others.
