When I was searching for colleges, I knew I wanted a
university that had a PRSSA (Public Relations Student Society of America )chapter and affiliation. The colleges I looked at
had a big program (Ohio University) or didn't have a program (Ohio Wesleyan
University). When I looked at Northern and had researched the chapter I knew it
was going to play an intricate part of my ONU experience if I chose to go there.
Following up on Ohio Northern's public relations chapter and the PRSSA
chapter was something I found necessary to do. After sharing some email
exchanges with Dr. Alisa Aigozzino (Aggie), I had set up a time to meet some
members for dinner and sit in on a PRSSA meeting. Dinner was at El Campo with Michaela (Long)
Carter and Ashley Dentinger! They were super welcoming to me as I was a
prospective student, and they were upperclassmen in the program. I not only got
to learn their involvement on Northern's campus but their participation in the
public relations major and the work that they were doing that semester.
The PRSSA meeting was right in my interested field as well!
The speaker had worked in many different areas of PR but spoke about her time
with the state. While there, she handled crisis management for the State Fair
Accident of 2017. The other members were also welcomed to be a high school
student sitting in on their meeting. To see the familial aspects of the group
really sparked my interest even more.
That
was one helpful hint that Ohio Northern was the right place for me. The
sprinkles on the cake occurred when I visited again for Accepted Students day
and had a meeting with Aggie and Joe! Joe was a junior at the time, and his
goal at the time was to be on PRSSA National Board. His work through PRSSA, the
department, and his hands-on experience helped to make anything possible for
him. Aggie and her students knew what
they were doing, what worked, and what they were improving on. I wanted to be
in this fantastic program. That was when I knew I was going to be a polar bear
and a member of PRSSA.
Now
that I am an active member of PRSSA and an undergraduate of public relations,
the tide still runs true for what I saw in the meeting I attended. The
department works hard as a unit supports others in their personal endeavors and
is a close-knit family. I am so pleased to be apart of this family and excited
to make my legacy on ONU's PRSSA Chapter, and in the field, I dearly adore!
